Creating a lasting culture can be challenging & fun.
Engaged Agility is new, there are many things I am trying to do such as setup a website, schedule training classes, and figure out what can and can’t be written off. As I do these administrative things, I also want to focus on building our culture. I know culture will build over time, but I also know that culture is formed in seemingly insignificant ways. I learned this from the kids I get to play with in nursery every week at church.
Before I started working in nursery, Rex was in there. Rex was great with the kids, and they all loved him. Rex was a true magician at building culture…here’s why:
Each week during snack time (still one of my favorite times in nursery), Rex would pass out the traditional animal crackers, pretzel sticks, and gold fish to all the nursery kids, who range in age from 18 months to 3 years old. Then one by one, the children would bring Rex a single gold fish and a pretzel stick. Rex would take the snack from their small hands and methodically use the pretzel as a drill and bury it in the side of the goldfish. The result was a fish on a stick, and the little ones LOVED it!
Fast forward 5+ years and here I am, trying to fill Rex’s big shoes. Rex hasn’t served the kids in nursery for years now, and the kids that he made fish on a stick for are all in 5 – 8 year-old Sunday School classes now. Most of the children in here now don’t even know who Rex is! But do you know what they want every week? Fish on a stick. They don’t know where the idea started, they just know it’s a fun way to eat snack on Sunday.
That’s culture. Things that stick with an organization for generations and generations (even when the generations turn over every 18 months).
I want to create a culture of engagement and fun at Engaged Agility. The classes we offer and coaching we do will be different and (hopefully) memorable.
It’s amazing what you can learn from 2-year olds. If they can build a fun and lasting culture, so can I. and generations (even when the generations turn over every 18 months).
